GISAID actively promotes the sharing of all influenza type virus sequences, related clinical and epidemiological data associated with human isolates, and geographic and species-specific data associated with avian and other animal isolates. To uphold GISAID’s unique sharing mechanism, all users must positively identify themselves. While GISAID data is publicly accessible, it does not fall under the legal definition of Public Domain since GISAID does not remove nor waive any preexisting rights should such rights exist.

GISAID is overseen via a verifiable and unbiased mechanism of organizational bodies that operate independent of each other.

The Government of the Federal Republic of Germany will be the long-term host of the GISAID Platform from 2011 onwards.
